Letter from the director of education in recognition of Education and Mental Health Week

It is hard to believe that May is upon us already. It has been a challenging yet rewarding school year with many staff and student accomplishments to celebrate. Our students are at the heart of everything we do and so it is fitting that both Education Week and Mental Health Week fall together at the beginning of May.

Education Week is recognized in Ontario as an opportunity for students, teachers, and families to highlight teaching excellence and student achievement. We are so fortunate in Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) to have extremely dedicated, passionate, and knowledgeable staff who are committed to success for all students, and to supporting student well-being.

Our Curriculum Services and Special Education Services departments have done amazing work using evidence-based research to ensure students gain the skills that they need to be successful. With a recent restructuring of our Mental Health Services team, our mental health counsellors and reengagement counsellors are directly supporting student well-being and staff learning. TLDSB administrators, teachers, designated early childhood educators, and educational assistants provide outstanding instructional leadership and direct student support in our schools. Our secretarial as well as our custodial and maintenance staff continue to be the foundation of ensuring our schools and buildings are safe and operational; and our system would not function without the support of all of our central staff who ensure essential services, such as transportation and information technology, are operating smoothly. Our staff’s commitment to supporting the two goals in our Strategic Plan of meaningful learning and success for all, and equity, inclusion, and well-being promotes and fosters excellence in TLDSB. During this week, and always, we are grateful that you are part of the TLDSB community.

We would also like to recognize and thank our community agencies and parents/guardians for supporting our staff and students, our students for engaging in learning, and our trustees for overseeing the governance role in TLDSB, ensuring we have the resources needed to support our goals.

Wishing everyone all the best for the final two months of the school year.

Sincerely,

Wes Hahn
Director of Education
