Dramatic arts bringing City of Kawartha Lakes students together

The Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI) Playmakers recently brought the hilarious, high-energy, and heartwarming production of Freaky Friday to life.

Held at the FLATO Academy Theatre in Lindsay on April 23 and 24, the musical featured both matinee and evening shows. Adapted from Mary Rodgers’ novel and the popular Disney movie, the story follows an overworked mother and her teen daughter who magically swap bodies and have one day to put things right again. Throughout their journey in each other’s shoes, Katherine and Ellie gain a deeper understanding of their individual challenges, fostering self-acceptance and a profound sense of mutual love and respect.

All feeder schools of LCVI were invited to see the performance on the afternoon of April 23. Following the production, the Playmakers hosted the Mariposa Elementary School Monarch Drama Club for an exclusive tour of FLATO Academy, and an engaging “talk back” session.

During the visit, the Monarchs posed insightful questions to the cast and crew, and even shared a performance of their own “Can’t Stop This Feeling” – blowing everyone’s “socks off” with a standing ovation from the Freaky Friday cast and crew!

LCVI co-directors of Freaky Friday, Brittany Zablosky and Lindsay Curran, described the experience as, “Very special and very memorable for all the participants. Our Playmakers were incredibly honoured and touched for this opportunity.”

LCVI Grade 12 student, Alyssa Whitehead, who played Ellie Blake in Freaky Friday stated, “This entire experience was surreal; from performing for the Monarchs and other feeder schools, to being treated like a local celebrity in our “talk back” – I feel so grateful to be a part of the LCVI Playmakers and to inspire other kids to stay in performing arts; it changes lives”.

Stay tuned to see what the LCVI Playmakers and the Mariposa Monarchs come up with next!
