Over three weeks in the summer, Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) delivered in-person learning to 181 students in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 2!
Hosted in 10 classrooms across six schools throughout the Board, the program focused on providing data-driven, responsive literacy instruction for students who would benefit from support in foundational literacy.
With support from Special Education Services, special education resource teachers (SERT) were included in the program for the first time. This addition expanded the Board’s ability to offer literacy instruction to a wider range of students in alignment with the Board’s commitment to providing equitable learning opportunities and support for all students.
Overall, 100 percent of participants gained valuable literacy support that helped bridge learning gaps, reduce summer learning loss, and build confidence for the upcoming school year.
“With the addition of SERTs in this year’s programming, this annual initiative provided tailored, responsive programming that helped students with special education needs reinforce foundational skills while achieving personal success,” explained Nikki Train, superintendent of learning responsible for Special Education. “This extension of learning outside the school year builds the student’s ability to grow in the areas of EQAO assessment as well. TLDSB has seen consistent growth and steady gains in students with special education needs in elementary school on EQAO assessments over the past three years.”
The two charts below show the percent of students with special education needs at or above provincial standard (Level 3 or 4), at both the Grade 3 and Grade 6 level.
