TLDSB robotics teams compete at the 2023 FIRST Robotics Provincial Competitions

Between January and April, five Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) robotics teams competed at the 2023 FIRST Robotics Competition.

Over the course of the 12 weeks, teams from Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School (BMLSS), Fenelon Falls Secondary School (FFSS), Gravenhurst High School (GHS), Huntsville High School (HHS), and IE Weldon Secondary School (IEWSS) all participated in the competitions across the province.

Each team was challenged to build a robot capable of speed, and having the ability to pick up and place pylon cones and inflatable cubes. They also needed a reliable autonomous program that is able to perform well, in order to measure a team’s capability.

On March 25 to 26, all five TLDSB robotics teams competed together at the 2023 FIRST Robotics Competition, Ontario District event in North Bay. Each team played 12 qualification matches to determine playoff rankings.

Overall, each team competed at their best in manufacturing, dedication, and displaying creativity. Below are the results from the competitions:

  • Team 4152 from HHS was captain of the winning alliance (a larger multi-team)
  • Team 6859 from BMLSS placed ninth
  • Team 6987 from FFSS placed nineteenth
  • Team 6864 from GHS was on the winning alliance
  • Team 8731 from IEWSS placed twenty seventh

Teams 4152 from HHS, 6987 from FFSS, and 6864 from GHS advanced onto the provincials, which took place on April 6 to 8 in Hamilton.

At the provincial competition, Hoya Robotics Team 4152 made it into the playoffs and were unfortunately eliminated by an alliance. Teams 6987 from FFSS and 6864 from GHS had many good matches, but unfortunately didn’t qualify for the playoffs.

“I am thrilled with the results,” said HHS robotics teacher, Ian McTavish. “Our team set a series of goals in September and we’ve met every goal so far. With winning two creativity awards for our integration of artificial intelligence and our stinger mechanism, we’ve shown we think outside the box.
